  • "Great trip, spoiled by check-in"

The trip, itself, was fine. But the check-in was so bad, I now understand why the ship was half-empty. GNV really need to update their check-in processes. You need to check-in 4 hours before, and most processes involve standing in the sun, and most processes involve paper!! Ridiculous! They really need to catch up with the rest of the transport world. Most check-in processes should be online, to begin with. Things should be explained on your ticket. We were simply told to check the Tunisian Government's website for Covid instructions and, according to that, i was fine (as an Australian). Despite having an International Vaccination Certificate, GNV made me walk, with my luggage, in the hot sun, 30 minutes to the only chemist around that does rapid Covid testing. And I even had my own COVID test kits on me that I could have done. That part was the worst but everything was a bit like that - slow and out-of date. I'd like to see more people travelling by ship, and less by plane. But the check-in processes must improve to encourage more people to travel by boat.

  • "Tunis Palermo "

The ship was great, cabin very good all clean and well done. But. Check in was 1600. Did not in fact open till 1730. We went through passport at 1930. Then a huge wait. Finally on board at 0300!! It was awful. The ship made up Time and arrived only slightly late but what was supposed to be an easy evening and long nights sleep Was spent in a hot embarkation area with no facilities. If you can’t process us in time don’t ask us to come to the port so early. We did not use the catering as no time. Glad I had not bought the catering package

  • "Good for the money, great views"

A really cool way to travel and sightsee at the same time! Definitely worth it! Felt safe the whole time, comfy beds. Polite and informative staff. Yummy food for purchase, more facilities than I expected. Cabins were dated and kinda gross, but with only an hour between cruises I can imagine it would be difficult to clean more than just changing the sheets.

  • "Un pleasant journey from Barcelona to Genoa"

The journey wasn’t up to my expectation. The service was not very satisfactory. I had to wait for 90 minutes in a long queue to be served for lunch at the buffet. The staff at the adjacent ristorante were not welcoming. No children facilities were available. The amenities and cafes are not available. Children running in corridors and making noises most of the time of the journey. All in all the journey wasn’t pleasant and not worth the money paid for it

I didn’t actually make the boat as I was mislead by your website , I put Genoa as my starting point and Tunis as my destination and on the next page when you select the date and time it automatically changes to Civitavecchia, but I wanted to leave from Genoa !!!! I ended up buying another ticket from GNV , I should really get a full refund !!

We had a deluxe cabin which was worth the money it cost. Only down side is the wait to board. As there is no cover it does get a bit stress full waiting in the sun. But I must say that everyone was given a bottle of water, which was rather thoughtful.

  • "Palermo to Tunis on GNV"

The booking process was the easiest part of this trip. It goes down hill rapidly after that and I do not know where to begin. Upon arrival at the GNV office in Palermo on a Saturday before Christmas there were 4 people working at the check in desk. We were told to be there at 7:30 a.m. for an 11 a.m. departure to collect our tickets. WHY cannot we print boarding passes? We finally boarded at 10:40 a.m The ferry departed at 1:30 (apparently this common between 2 and 5 hours late). We then walked over 1 km to the immigration gate. BTW if it is raining there is no cover whilst queuing for the tickets or the arrival at the ship. There is no such thing as a line at the check in terminal or queue for the ship so shoving and pushing and cutting the line is allowed. The actual cabin was clean however. On the day crossing there were announcements every hour so if you are thinking of getting some sleep during the crossing forget it! Upon arrival in Tunis we walked a km to the arrival terminal. Again no apparent line and then you had porters heavily laden with luggage trying to get through the line to the x ray machines. The passport control at Tunis had no internet service so after arriving at 11:45 p.m. we stood in line being shoved and pushed for the next 2 hours until we were able to get through passport control. The return trip fared no better but at least the Tunis ferry terminal is an actual building with toilets and a coffee shop! We arrived at the Tunis ferry terminal at 7 p.m. for an 11:00 p.m. departure. At this point the ferry was delayed by a mere 1.5 hours. At 10 p.m. we were allowed into the departure lounge. The departure lounge had a very limited amount of seating. The pushing and shoving that ensued once they opened the gate towards the boat (another 1 km walk) and now we were boarded at 1:30 a.m. The ship departed at 3:00 a.m. so a mere 4 hours late. At 9:00 a.m. the announcements started at 9:00 a.m. over the loud speakers. The cabin was clean. We had to leave our cabin at 11:30 a.m. as the ship was docking at 12:30 we got off the boat at 1:30 and walked the 1/2 km to the Italian immigration point. They had 1 x ray machine to process all the passengers and their suitcases! We were fortunate to be 3rd in line so got through relatively quickly. We walked back through the ferry terminal another 1 km walk. There was a small bus that did ferry the passengers to the entrance of the ferry terminal but it was a very small bus. This is the most poorly organized means of transport that I have EVER experienced and I have been traveling for over 50 years.

  • "Make you're mind up time"

We travelled on Sunday 28 October 2018 from Palermo ostensibly to Civitavecchia. However, due to very bad weather in Italy Civitavecchia port was closed. Weather conditions are what they are. HOWEVER, we stood on the dockside at Palermo while the Italians dithered and dithered. No-one know what was going on. There was no official communication to foot passengers nor to drivers of vehicles. It was a mess. At one time the ship was going to Naples, then it wasn't. Then it was going to Civitavecchia, but not until the following morning and if we wanted to go earlier and get to Naples we had to change our tickets and take another line. Then a decision was made. The ship, Splendid, would go to Naples and then on to Civitavecchia when the weather improved. Then what happened? NOthing. We waited on the quayside for another hour as they couldn't decided when we should embark. On board they couldn't tell us when we would arrive in Naples, but the could tell us that the ship would arrive at Civitavecchia at 4 am on Tuesday morning. What a nightmare! Nice cabin, but freezing cold.

  • "Nice ferry but huge delays"

I like GNV and have previously sailed with them within Italy. I knew there would be additional security checks on the route from Tunis to Palermo because of Tunisia being outside the EU and because of people smuggling problems. However, I was not prepared for the length of the process. the ship arrived in Tunis 1.5 hours late and left 3 hours later than advertised, and meanwhile we were stuck in a small holding area for several hours with no information, after completing emigration/security. The boat itself was nice and the night trip enjoyable. Most of the cafes and bars were closed but there was a nice 24-hour bar/buffet. the cabins were very good, spacious with good bathrooms. On arrival in Italy, we then spent two hours in the queue for immigration/customs, which was very slow and inefficient (and queueing in the hot sun). We were lucky as we were foot passengers and got off first - for the car passengers, there would have been far longer waiting times. Of course the immigration and customs checks at each end are not GNV's responsibility, though the late running and slow boarding process are. But people should be warned about the length of time involved, and given more information while in the ferry terminal.

  • "Another trip from Hell"

Finding GNV check in at Civitavecchia (Port of Rome) is difficult as the signage is almost non existant. Instructions to be at check in no later than 2 hours before departure was a joke. Nothing opened until 2 hours before departure when there was an unruly rush to the various windows. At check in we were told to go to pier 28-this was wrong and a very rude man with a holstered pistol told us to turn round and park at pier 27. In due course we were loaded, but from Garage B the stairs are difficult to reach the lift on Deck 3. On Deck 7 we checked in and given the key to our cabin. We quickly noticed the corridoor carpet was filthy dirty and clearly had not been vacuumed for a very long tme. Our cabin was sparten to say the least-no TV and more like I imagine a prison cell. The ship is clearly very old and either needs scraping or major refubishment. The shops and main bar was closed and remained closed throughout the journey. The only good feature was the restaurant (not the cafeteria) which hardly anyone used. We used it for lunch and dinner and at dinner were the only couple present. As we approached the port we were told to vacate our cabins and go to deck 7. As I am partly handicapped I asked if I could remain in the cabin until we arrived. I was told yes I could, but a crew member banged on our door and rudely told us we had to "get out". We arrived at Palermo Termini Imersese over half an hour late and by the time we actually got off it was almost an hour after docking. This was an unpleasant journey. We have another one with GNV on 6th July which we are viewing with trepidation!! These ferries used to be good but now I think they are pretty bad.

  • "From Palermo to Civitavecchia"

Be aware that arrival at the docks is not easy. Firstly the sign postings for embarkation are nearly non existing. Departure for Civitavecchia is not on the list of departure destinations. We, as many others turned into the wrong gate. When we eventually arrived at the right gate entrance was refused until we had a valid ticket to show. WE had to return to the first gate, which was via nearly a kilometer of driving, back, find parking , walk nearly 600 metres to the ticket office return to the car, back to the second gate to be ushered in. After that the rest was easy. Nice boat, nice cabin lovely crossing. Arrival at Civitavecchia and disembarking was easy. It would be helpful if Direct Ferries warned passengers about embarking at Palermo. And why cannot a ticked be issued in advance, print out via computer. So much easier.

  • "Complete chaos - GNV Civitavecchia - Palermo Return Termini Immerese - Civitavecchia."

We are frequent users of other ferries and especially Brittany Ferries. This GNV is grossly expensive, poorly organised and poor quality everything. Food - very little available at a 19.00 sailing from Rome, and the small cafe is right next to large smokers hall. We pre booked meals on return journey and what poor quality so much so that all we had to eat was a cold potato salad, tomatoes and two pears with a cold drink. 20euros each! Breakfast was 10 euros for one tiny roll, croissant and weak coffee. Boarding - complete chaos and downright dangerous boarding and embarking. No lines to park in so every person for themselves. People skipping the queue, lorries pushing in and no direction of when or where to go. I am very surprised our car was not hit. Cleanliness - cabin was dirty - cleaners don't believe in vacuuming corners where all the dust collects. Cabins - no efficient means of air control. It was a Greek ferry on return - signage poor and this where the food was atrocious. None of the shops were open for the whole of the 16 hour journey. Both ferries were late leaving and late arriving and yet they expect you to be at the ferry port to collect your ticket at least two hours before. Why on earth can't they email your ticket like Brittany Ferries do. Appalling value for money - I suggest one of your representatives travels with Brittany Ferries to see what quality looks like and then visits GNV ferries.

I was very impressed with the accommodations on the ship. The room we booked was very nice and clean with a bathroom with shower and towels. We did not eat aboard the ship. I was disappointed that the gift store was closed and also at least one of the bars. Maybe this was because we were travelling mid October.
