About Capraia Island

The Italian island of Capraia is part of the Tuscan Archipelago, roughly sixty two kilometres from the coast of Livorno. Volcanic in origin, Capraia is the third largest of the island chain, after Elba and Giglio, measuring nineteen square kilometres and reaching four hundred and sixty six metres above sea level. However, despite its small size, it boasts national park and marine sanctuary status, offering a great deal to nature lovers. One of the standout features is an abandoned penal colony, characterised by clifftop turrets and ruinous buildings, which are best appreciated along a scenic coastal hike. Other cultural attractions include a historic village, known locally as ‘Paese’, and the superb seafood restaurants throughout the island. If you’re looking for somewhere off the beaten track during your Tuscan holiday, Capraia should top the list. It’s easily accessible from Livorno by ferry, with numerous routes on offer every week.
